I love this app!

This app does NOT grade essays, so if that is what you are looking for, this is not the app for you. What is *does* have is TONS and TONS of well thought out, well written comments on a variety of different areas. I have made my own macros to do this for me, but this app has WAY more responses than I could ever think of, and it's all ready to go!

Awesome

My first reaction when I saw the name of the app was "there is no way this app can possibly grade essays". I was right, but once I understood what the app could do I was sold. This is a brilliant idea that is very well-executed. What made this particularly useful to me was the ability to modify the database for my needs. My students wrote a 5 paragraph essay that would have taken me many hours to grade. With Essay Grader Mac I was able to tailor the database to match the rubric I use. The comments are now specific to the essay I'm grading and, instead of writing out the same comment dozens of times, I now just click on the button. In fact, I set it up so that each tab corresponds to a different paragraph in the essay and, in the feedback page students receive they show up as a different paragraph. This way students can read through my comments as they look over the essay from start to finish. Students then receive detailed comments related to various parts of the essay and rubric. Once you play around with the app and you understand how it works you'll realize just how powerful and useful it is for the teacher and students. Granted, there is a small learning curve and there is some work you will need to put in to modifying the database for each particular assignment, but the time spent is well worth it.

I did have a few questions early on that were not answered in the videos. I emailed Colin and he got right back to me with very useful, specific directions that got me back on track.

I highly recommend this app to teachers looking to save time while also giving detailed, specific and useful feedback to students. I've recommended the app to other teachers at my school in our Social Studies Department as well as those in the English Department.

Alternatively, you can make proofreader's marks in conjunction with Essay Grader Mac.

No. Essay Grader Mac is not automatic grading software and this is the biggest misconception about our product. Essay Grader Mac uses pre-written comments to compile a feedback sheet to be given to the student. The feedback sheet is a list of comments that amounts to a mini-tutorial. The feedback sheet can either be stapled to the back of the student's paper or emailed directly to him or her.

  • What are "Comments 1" "Comments 2" "Comments 3" etc.?

Each comment (pre-written block of text) should say just about the same thing, but the wording of each comment should vary. By using different versions of the same comment, instructors can create the illusion that he / she has written fresh comments on each student's paper. Alternatively, some instructors use the different comment banks to signify varying degrees or different variations of the same error. Essay Grader Mac can be edited to function in many different ways. BUT . . . the same comment can only be selected in one bank at a time.

  • Where can I find a copy of the default comment database?

Download a copy of the default comment database under the "Downloads" tab.

  • Where can I find copies of the testing databases referenced in your YouTube tutorial?

Download copies of testing databases under the "Downloads" tab.

No. The vertical columns in the CSV database must remain as they appear in the default comment database. All cells in the CSV from column A to column I must be filled, even if you just use filler text. There can be no empty cells.

Yes. You can display the horizontal rows in any way you choose. Your changes will also be reflected in the app interface. View our YouTube tutorial for this topic under the "Tutorials" tab.

As of our iOS 7 update you can choose from four different types of encoding:
    Choose "Import with option"
    1. ASCII (American) - Wikipedia
    2. Latin 1 (Western European) - Wikipedia
    3. Latin 2 (Eastern European) - Wikipedia
    4. UTF-8 (International)- Wikipedia

  • Can I use Essay Grader Mac with foreign languages?

Yes. As of our iOS 7 update 4.2 you can use different character encoding in your database. However, if you want to play it safe, please stick to standard characters in the ASCII character set.

  • Can I use special characters in the Essay Grader Mac database and class list?

No. You can never use characters such as curly apostrophes, curly quotes, dash symbols, superscript, subscript, fractions, etc. These characters often creep into your database when you cut and paste from programs like MS Word. Turn off the auto correct for those characters in Word.

  • What is the best way to transfer my custom database from Essay Grader Mac to Essay Grader iPad?

Use Dropbox to accomplish this task.

  • What programs can I use to edit my database and class lists?

Microsoft Excel and Apple Numbers (versions newer than 2010).

  • I'm using Windows Excel to create or edit my database and class list, but my files fail to import or make EG crash. How can I repair this?

It seems that there are several different types of CSV files. While most of the newer programs seem to import and work fine, sometimes files from Windows machines do not import properly because of a minor difference in the internal (invisible) formatting. For this version we have a found a workaround:
    1. Download Notepad++ ( http://notepad-plus-plus.org )
    2. Open your CSV file with with Notepad++
    3. Edit > EOL Conversion > UNIX/OSX Format
    4. Save (choose all types, then name it with file extension .csv, because the default file name do not have a CSV file extension)

  • Essay Grader Mac has crashed. I imported my custom comment database, but now the app won't open.

There is a problem with your custom comment database. Most likely, something is missing or arranged improperly. Repair your database or class list. Delete and reinstall the app. The most likely scenario is that you have blank spaces (cells) in your database or you have included special characters. You can never use characters such as curly apostrophes, curly quotes, dash symbols, superscript, subscript, fractions, etc. These characters often creep into your database when you cut and paste from programs like MS Word. Turn off the auto correct for those characters in Word.
