Perfect for Trying to Decode Literature and Improve Your Writing
By Tymala on April 29, 2012
I am doing my own self-study course at home trying to grasp literature, vocabulary, and improve my writing skills. My study of foreign languages and domestic home life with a foreigner has both helped and hindered my own language. I have been living abroad for 8 years and even though I teach ESL, my academic English skills have been dwindling as well as my writing skills. I usually teach tenses to intermediate vocabulary, I do not teach words such as jingoist, ebullient, intrepid, ect...and by all means do not analyze literature as of yet. I find myself sometime making grammar mistakes that my foreign friends do and have kind of fallen behind in advanced English and writing skills for someone who may want to become a writer someday. I am currently buying books such as SAT and GRE practice guides to get myself back on track. I stumbled upon this because it highlighted both my issues that I want to work on- literary analysis and essay writing.
What I like about this writing guide is the fact that he has so much visualization- which is how I learn. I need wheels, I need pictures, I need charts, in other words I desperately need to see diagrams and have things organized in lists to really retain information, and this guide does exactly what I need. I'm currently reading "The Educated Mind" by Susan Wise Bauer and am trying to read some of her books that she suggests that are essential for a literature collection. I have a love/hate relationship with literature, and get bored with many works, but adore the writers who get my attention. I hate symbolism! This book in addition to Susan's has helped me understand literature better, but I have my charts and visualization with this guide.

This book is a guide to help students write more thoroughly engaging and accurate essays. I recommend it because it is easy to read and provides quick tips to the beginning college essay writer.
